Phantom Blade Zero Abilities & Progression: Remnant Dust, Upgrade Materials

How progression works in Phantom Blade Zero: Remnant Dust isn't XP, 32 trainable abilities, and the collectibles that gate your power.

Is Remnant Dust experience points?

No — Remnant Dust is a currency, not XP. You spend it to train abilities, upgrade weapons and Phantom Edges, and buy goods. There is no character level; your strength comes from three places: ability training, equipment upgrades, and permanent collectible bonuses. And since defeated enemies stay dead when you rest, dust and materials come from exploring, not farming — the world hands you a finite but generous supply.

How do abilities work?

You train abilities at any Bell. There are about 32 of them, priced from free to 85,000 Remnant Dust, arranged in three rows. Each row is unlocked by collecting enough of a matching material — Black Stones, Sha-Chi Ambers, or Memory Blossoms (see below). Two comfort rules make experimenting safe:

  • Resets refund 100% of your dust. Respec anytime, free of regret.
  • Early nodes are cheap and immediately useful.

Strong early picks:

Ability Cost Why
Fluid Form Free Foundational mobility node
Healing Art 5,000 Adds an elixir charge — more forgiveness
Steady Composure 5,000 Steadier defense economy
Boundless Capacity 10,000 Extra accessory slot
Thousand-Mile Stride 10,000 Faster sprinting — exploration pays for itself

Which collectibles matter?

Collectible Effect
Black Stone (4 fragments combine) Permanent +10% attack and guard break; unlocks skill-chain nodes
Sha-Chi Amber (4 fragments) Permanent +10% maximum Sha-Chi
Memory Blossom (petal sets) Permanent max-health increases (~5% / 7% / 10% tiers)
Banyan Heart Late-game advanced material — roughly eight per playthrough, sold for 100,000 dust each by Quick Hand Zhang

These are why detours matter: a fragment behind a side path is a permanent stat you carry to the final boss.
